HOTEL: TRINCO BLU BY CINNAMON **** (or similar 4*)
Early in the morning, we prepare to visit one of the most valuable historical monuments in Sri Lanka and its symbol, SIGIRIYA. An ancient fortress built on top of a 200-meter-high rock, accessible only through the mouth of a huge lion sculpted in stone.
History tells us that in 477 AD, Kashyapa, the son of the king from a non-royal consort, took the throne from King Dathusena after a coup, helped by Migara, the king’s nephew and army commander. The rightful heir, Moggallana, fearing for his life, fled to southern India. Fearing an attack from Moggallana, Kashyapa moved the capital and his residence from the traditional capital Anuradhapura to Sigiriya, a safer area. During King Kashyapa’s reign (477–495 AD), Sigiriya was transformed into a complex city and fortress. Most of the elaborate constructions on the top and around the rock, including defensive structures, palaces, and gardens, date from this period. Climbing the Sigiriya rock to reach the fortress requires moderate effort of approximately 1–1.5 hours, following a route with multiple steps, the most difficult part being near the end, where narrow metal steps positioned almost vertically on the rock walls must be climbed. However, once at the top, we are fully rewarded by the grandeur, historical value, and beauty of the ancient fortress ruins, considered by locals as the 8th wonder of the world. The descent takes 30–45 minutes. Next, we have another interesting experience in Habarana: a traditional bullock cart ride. This allows us to experience the authentic rural lifestyle of Sri Lankan villages, traveling through lush green rice fields. Tea and a traditional Sri Lankan meal will be served. Traditional coconut cooking methods and the weaving of palm leaf roofs will be demonstrated. To end the day in a relaxing and enjoyable way, we have prepared an optional surprise experience at one of the local traditional spa centers. Here, we can pamper ourselves for approximately 2 hours with various Ayurvedic treatments, massages, saunas, and/or steam baths (optional). In the evening, we arrive in Trincomalee, a port city on the east coast of Sri Lanka by the Indian Ocean, where we check in to a resort and enjoy dinner.
Included meals for the day: Breakfast and Dinner.

On this day, we offer two optional excursions, which can be done one after the other so that you can enjoy both unique experiences. The first is a 3–4 hour boat trip on the Indian Ocean in search of whales and dolphins in their natural habitat, departing around 5:30 AM. Whale sightings depend entirely on luck during their migration period in this area, but the chance to observe dolphins during this excursion is 100%. The second optional excursion is to Pigeon Island National Park, which involves a boat trip to the island’s beautiful beaches and snorkeling in one of the most beautiful and well-preserved coral reefs on the island. For approximately 2 hours, the local guide will lead us on a unique snorkeling experience around the island, where we will have the opportunity to observe and encounter various species of colorful fish, turtles, coral sharks, and other impressive marine creatures. The price of the excursion includes the entrance ticket to Pigeon Island (Marine Nature Reserve), snorkeling equipment, and boat transfer. At the end of the day, we will visit one of the most important Hindu temples, dating back to 400 BC, the KONESHWARAM Temple in Trincomalee. During European colonization, this Hindu temple went through many prosperous years as well as turbulent times. Located within the historic Fort Frederick, the temple offers the perfect balance of the island’s unique culture in an otherwise European setting. The temple is now adorned with many sculptures of Lord Shiva, Ganesh, and Goddess Parvati, along with many other elements that show how important this place of worship is to the people of Sri Lanka. In the evening, we return to the resort in Trincomalee for dinner, relaxation, and sleep. Included meals for the day: Breakfast and Dinner.

DAY 5
DAY SUMMARY:
TRINCOMALEE / POLONNARUWA / MATALE SPICE GARDEN / KANDY TRADITIONAL DANCE SHOW
LUNCH: OPTIONAL
TRANSPORT: COACH
INCLUDED MEALS: BREAKFAST AND DINNER
HOTEL: CINNAMON BY KANDY MIST**** (or similar 4*)
Early in the morning, after breakfast, we board the coach and set off for our next destination, the ancient city of POLONNARUWA. Polonnaruwa is another UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was the capital of Sri Lanka between the 11th and 13th centuries and contains several splendid and spectacular statues, along with multiple temples and religious buildings, still in very good condition.
Gal Vihare, a rock sanctuary, houses four statues of Buddha: two seated, one standing, and one lying down, while the Parakrama Bahu statue is an example of Sinhalese stone sculpture. Vata-da-ge is a unique creation of Sri Lankan artists. The medieval capital Polonnaruwa was fortified with moats and inner and outer walls. The Royal Palace, Audience Hall, and other buildings within the city were enclosed by an additional high wall. Next, we head to Matale, where we have lunch (optional) and visit a spice garden, familiarizing ourselves with some of the spices for which Sri Lanka is famous: cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, vanilla, cardamom, and black pepper. In ancient times, Greeks, Romans, and Arabs maintained trade links with Sri Lanka through the spice trade. In the 16th century, Ceylon, as the island was then known, was discovered by the Portuguese, who soon began trading cinnamon and other spices. The Dutch and British followed, bringing their own history and influences, forming a strong Western presence that created a culinary legacy expressed through spices that can still be tasted in dishes today. Spices are an essential element of Sri Lankan cuisine and Ayurvedic tradition, and a visit to a specialized garden is an excellent way to learn about the therapeutic roles and new culinary uses of these plants. In the evening, we arrive in Kandy, located in the central part of the island, the last capital of the ancient kings of Sri Lanka. Here, we indulge our senses with an impressive Sri Lankan traditional dance show at the Kandy theater. We check in to the hotel in Kandy and enjoy dinner. Included meals for the day: Breakfast and Dinner.

LUNCH: OPTIONAL

INCLUDED MEALS: BREAKFAST AND DINNER
HOTEL: YARA NUWARAELIYA*** (or similar 4*)
The morning begins in a deeply spiritual way with a visit to the famous Temple of the Sacred Tooth in Kandy, one of the most sacred sites for Buddhists worldwide. In a serene atmosphere, amid the scent of incense and the sound of ritual drums, you will discover a part of Sri Lanka’s soul and the profound history of this island nation. We continue with a colorful and fragrant walk through the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens. With over 4,000 plant species, from rare orchids to giant tropical trees, this green paradise invites you to wander along scented paths and perfectly manicured lawns. After this immersion in nature, we head to a spectacular symbol of innovation and harmony with nature: Ambuluwawa Tower. Situated on a hill with impressive panoramic views, this unique structure offers dizzying vistas of mountains, valleys, and lush fields. The climb is optional, but the view from the top is unforgettable for those who choose to take it on. In the afternoon, we find ourselves in the heart of the tea country. We visit the Dambro Tea Factory, where we learn about the traditional tea production process, from the green leaf to the golden infusion in the cup. We will taste the finest teas and stroll among the terraced plantations, enjoying the fresh mountain air and storybook landscapes. Like a wine tasting, traditional tea tasting involves sipping the tea (without milk), swirling it in the mouth to appreciate the flavor, and then spitting it into a spittoon. Some tea factories still follow these traditional methods, although spitting is no longer as common today. In the evening, we arrive in Nuwara Eliya, known as the “Little England” of Sri Lanka, where we check in to the hotel and have time to relax in its colonial atmosphere, at the foot of the cool mountains shrouded in the fragrant mist of tea plantations. Included meals for the day: Breakfast and Dinner.

We will travel approximately 8 km in tuk-tuks through absolutely stunning green tea plantations. Afterwards, we head to the second tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka, Diyaluma Ella, which is also famous and impressive for the multiple natural infinity pools formed along its tiers. The trail is one of the easiest in Sri Lanka and offers the same spectacular landscapes as its bigger brother, Adam’s Peak. At the summit, we enjoy a 360° panoramic view of the entire mountainous region at sunrise. Next, we head to a viewpoint of the famous Nine Arch Bridge between Ella and Demodara station, one of the engineering marvels of the early 20th century. This bridge, nearly 100 years old, was built with stone blocks and cement, without reinforcing iron or concrete. The giant arches carry the bridge on a curved trajectory to connect the mountains. In the second part of the day, we reach one of the most famous national parks in Sri Lanka, Yala, and enjoy a few hours of safari until evening. Yala National Park, also known as Ruhuna, is an important park on the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka, covering 979 km², although only the initial 141 km² are open to the public. Yala has the highest density of leopards in the world, though seeing this mostly nocturnal predator requires some luck. There is a large population of Asian elephants, crocodiles, wild boars, water buffaloes, and gray langurs, among other large mammals: sloths, jackals, deer, and over 215 bird species! The open park also attracts birds of prey, such as the white-bellied sea eagle, while wetland areas are home to painted storks and the rare black-necked storks. With its high leopard density, Yala National Park is one of the best places in the world to observe these magnificent felines in their natural habitat, as well as other large mammals. MIRISSA / THALPE ROCK BEACH / STILT FISHING / TURTLE HATCHERY / MADU RIVER SAFARI / COLOMBO AIRPORT
LUNCH: OPTIONAL

MEALS INCLUDED: BREAKFAST
HOTEL: –
After breakfast, we set off with our luggage and begin the last day in Sri Lanka in style, visiting the famous pools located on Thalpe Rock Beach, by the Indian Ocean. This beach is unique thanks to the multiple rectangular pools carved into the dead coral reef along the shore more than 50 years ago by the locals, originally used to soak coconuts and remove the fibrous husks from their surface. A special opportunity for each of us to enjoy our very own bathtub in the Indian Ocean! We then continue to admire and photograph a traditional local practice known as “Stilt Fishing.” This method is a unique fishing tradition among the coastal communities of southern Sri Lanka. Fishermen, perched on a crossbar tied to a tall wooden pole and holding a rudimentary fishing rod, are an iconic scene that cannot be missed. The simple equipment used for stilt fishing is handcrafted by the fishermen themselves, following an ancient tradition and using specific types of wood. Please note: taking photos of the fishermen or trying the stilt fishing yourself requires an additional tip, which is not included in the tour price. Our visits continue with one of the most renowned turtle hatcheries on the island, where we will see the impressive efforts made to increase the reproduction and survival rates of over five different species of turtles, right from their very first moments of life We then embark on a 2-hour motorboat safari through mangrove caves along the channels and estuary of the Madu River, home to a rich ecosystem of fish species, migratory birds, and other wildlife. At the end of this safari, we will all enjoy a special foot spa treatment performed by Garra rufa fish! At the end of the day, we stop for an (optional) dinner before arriving at Airport.
